Tip! The certification exam is a difficult one. The industry standard pass rate is rumored at 60%.
When you’re studying for your CCNA exam, whether you’re taking the Intro-ICND path or the single-exam path, you’re quickly introduced to the fact that switching occurs at Layer 2 of the OSI model. No problem there, but then other terms involving switching are thrown in, and some of them can be more than a little confusing. What is “cell switching”? What is “circuit switching”? Most confusing of all, how can you have “packet switching”? Packets are found at Layer 3, but switching occurs at Layer 2. How can packets be switched?

Tip! While working for a software vendor who had decided to initiate a certification program, I was chosen to become one a few engineers who were selected to provide support for certified customers. When told what we would be doing differently for these customers, the management said the approach would be to treat these companies like they knew a little more than a regular customer, and skip a few of the normal preliminary questions when initiating the process of opening a support issue.

Just applying for the certification will require 10 years’ experience in IT as well as three years of practical experience as a network architect.

Microsoft is revamping its certification tracks, and will eventually retire the familiar MCSE certificatons. The new certification setup is much like Cisco’s, where there are specialist certifications to go along with the more general CCNA, then mid-level certifications such as the CCNP, and then a more-advanced practical exam modeled somewhat after the coveted CCIE certification.

Tip! With a sufficient amount of trivia collected, software and hardware vendors launched their certification testing plans at a price level that added enough credibility to the program to convince customers that they would really be getting something if they paid to have their employees engage in these testing procedures, at a level of difficulty which practically ensured that those who took these exams would have to repeat the testing process a number of times before they could pass. As technicians devised ways to prepare for passing these exams more easily, changes to the tests, revisions of the technologies, and requirements for new certifications on releasing new iterations of systems and software have kept the business of charging large sums of money for the process alive and well.
When you’re preparing to pass the CCNA exam and earn this coveted Cisco certification, you’ve got to be totally prepared for the many kinds of binary and subnetting questions Cisco may throw at you. You also have to be familiar with the different manners in which a subnet mask can be expressed, and that’s where your knowledge of prefix notation comes in. Prefix notation is an alternate way to express the value of a subnet mask, as opposed to the more familiar dotted decimal format. Not only will you see prefix notation in Cisco documentation, but you’ll probably see it on your CCNA exam. Consider the following two values:
